Municipal office revamp loses momentum

Construction process not moving forward.

The much needed revamping process of the municipal offices in Ballito has come to a complete halt, leaving the offices unusable and unfinished.

The buildings were evacuated and the roof removed before the project was abandoned.

What was meant to have been a six month project now has an estimated completion date of June 2016.

Ballito’s ward six councillor Colin Marsh said the contract with the original contractor has been cancelled and the process is starting afresh.

“It seems that the scope of work was increased and during this process the consultant and the contractor would appear to have lost their way. One of the parties has not performed and has led to the non-completion of this minor revamp and because the municipal officials were slow to react, they only recently terminated both the contract of the consultant and the contractor and the whole process started anew,” said Marsh.

He added that the extra cost of housing the staff temporarily in containers in Salt Rock could lead to wasteful expenditure never mind the lack of service to rate payers and staff dissatisfaction.
