Tongaat mall closing arguments heard today

After more than a year, the inquiry into the collapsed structure is nearing its end.

The closing arguments in the commission of inquiry into the collapse of the Tongaat mall are being heard today.

The commission was established to investigate events leading to the collapse of the mall on November 19 last year. The disaster killed two construction workers and injured 29 others.

The Thongathi Mall Structural Collapse Commission of Inquiry will round of its work with a presentation of heads of argument by all parties including the contractor or owner, engineer, Ethekwini municipality, and workers represented by the Labour department.

A final site visit by the National Prosecuting Authority will also be conducted.

Presiding officer, Phumudzo Maphaha, said earlier this month that he will need at least 30 days thereafter to complete his report, which he would hand over to the Labour Minister; Mildred Oliphant and National Directorate of Public Prosectution for its decision.

Maphaha said once he has completed his report a decision on the future of the mall would be decided.

The commission into the collapse has been collecting evidence since February 2014.
