Nkobongo residents get their hands dirty

Community work together to clean up surroundings.

Nkobongo township residents decided to kick start the year by cleaning and opening up streams and drains in their area.

The zone three community took action after two houses were nearly washed away by overflowing streams on December 31.

“Streams and drains here were blocked and when the rain came, water flooded into people’s houses.

So we decided to make sure water flows smoothly to the Nkobongo River,” said a resident Philani Pityo.

The water damaged the homes and possessions of the Ngiba and Nzuza families.

“We are trying to show unity in our area and show initiative as the youth of Nkobongo,” said Pityo.

Residents claim they have reported the damage to ward eight councillor, Themba Ntuli.

Ntuli however, said he was unaware of the flooding but that if he had been told, he would have assisted the affected families.
