Major drought brings Ballito water restrictions

The use of hosepipes, washing of driveways, roofs and vehicles as well as the use of irrigation systems is banned.

Due to the ongoing drought and future weather forecasting systems indicating strong probabilities for below-normal rainfall conditions for greater parts of South Africa Umgeni Water has implemented water restrictions in the greater Ballito area.

The area serviced by Sembcorp Siza Water in KwaDukuza is from Zimbali, Ballito, Chakas Rock, Salt Rock, Sheffield to Tinley Manor and also includes Shakaskraal, Etete and Nkobongo (the area that previously fell under the Dolphin Coast municipality).

The use of hosepipes, washing of driveways, roofs and vehicles as well as the use of irrigation systems is banned until further notice. Consumers who do not comply will be liable for a fine of R3000.

Umgeni Water is currently monitoring the dam storages, abstractions and water demand patterns closely in response to possible impacts of El Nino. Umgeni Water reports the Hazelmere catchment, that is the source of our water supply, is currently at 56 percent opposed to 98 percent in September of last year.

The water service provider urges consumers to conserve water and to visit their website for a full list if water restrictions and to download necessary forms. Consumers can register their cell phone numbers and email addresses for alerts from Umgeni Water at info-sizawater@sembcorp.com or 032-9467200 during office hours.

Conserve water

We can all do our part by installing covers on pools and checking for leaks around our pool pumps. Repair leaking toilet cisterns as quickly as possible to reduce water wastage. A dripping tap could waste as much as 90 litres of water a week, so please ensure that all taps are repaired timeously.

Starting a compost pile is also helpful in conserving water. Using compost when planting adds water-holding organic matter to the soil.
