Three arrested for violent Madundube protest

Three trucks were set alight and police were stoned by the mob on Sunday.

Three residents have been arrested for public violence during the service delivery and housing protest in Madundube (of which Ashville is a suburb).

The R74 road is still closed between Dorinkop and Maphumulo.

Over a thousand residents closed down the R74 with burning tyres and stones demanding houses on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday KwaDukuza municipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu attended a community meeting to address their concerns and the crowd was allegedly unhappy with the reply Mthembu gave them.

According to a witness who did not want to be named in fear of retribution, some residents left during the meeting and started the protest.

“He came here to tell us that the housing project may start only in 2015, and that is what we do not want. We have been waiting for so long,” said the resident.

Mthembu confirmed that he attended the meeting and that it had not been successful.

“The municipality received the land for the houses two months back and its impossible to start the project in five weeks time. But I can say something will happen from March 2015,” said the mayor.

KwaDukuza municipality are holding a press briefing this morning on the ongoing protest in Madundube.

KwaDukuza SAPS communication officer constable Sbusiso Khumalo said the police are monitoring the area.

Three trucks, at least one carrying timber, were set alight and police were stoned by the mob on Sunday.
