Gralio fails to produce important documents – Tongaat mall inquiry

Surprise testimony from Cameron Bulter.

Proceedings at the  Tongaat Mall Commission started with commission presiding officer, Phumudzo Maphaha berating Gralio Construction for their failure to submit documents he requested at the commission’s previous sitting.

He stated Gralio’s Ravi Jagadesan would be liable for prosecution if the documents are not submitted by September 25 and requested a formal response from his lawyers.

An unplanned testimony from witness Cameron Bulter was first on the agenda.

Bulter is the Ballito branch manager for Form Scaff, the company that supplied material for the collapsed section of the mall.
His testimony revealed that his company was not asked to provide designs for the collapsed section. He said he was told by site foreman Ronnie Pillay that this was not needed.
Bulter also testified that the original engineer’s drawings submitted to Form Scaff in May 2013 did not include a request for beams.
Bulter claimed Form Scaff was not asked to revise their designs to include beams,  conceding a design without beams could have  “catastrophic” consequences.
The commission continues with testimony from expert engineer, Dr Piet Pretorius,  who has asked to submit additional evidence before his cross examination.
