Eskom restores power to ward 22

Numerous power outages plagued the ward last week.

Residents of ward 22 are disgruntled following almost a week of power cuts.

Last week the KwaDukuza municipality announced a planned shut down for maintenance on Wednesday, but power kept dipping on Thursday and Friday.

KDM’s Nick Hall said it was a combination of challenges, mainly caused by the failure of an Eskom transformer.

A statement from the municipality explained that the southern network (Driefontein substation) experienced an interruption on August 15, around 8.30am.

No fault was found, but Ballito was affected in its entirety.

There was a second interruption at 11.30am at Driefontein, coupled with a 33Kv breaker that tripped at the Shakaskraal substation.

Later investigations revealed that the fault was with Eskom and incorrect network configuration had caused an overload. This affected Ballito, Chaka’s Rock, Salt Rock, Sheffield and the Imbonini Business Park.

The rain caused a third disruption just before midnight when the geyser control at the Shakaskraal substation exploded, causing a system fail.

This time, Shakaskraal, Foxhill, Shakashead, Nkobongo, Shayamoya and Tiffany’s Mall were affected.

“Eskom advised that they have noticed a hot connection on of their man 33Kv bus-bars, which has to be repaired as a high priority.”

The fourth interruption on August 16 resulted from Eskom isolating the Shakaskraal substation without prior notice.

Hall said power has been restored to affected areas and should remain stable.
