M4 protest gets violent

Thuthukani Seatides residents back on the streets demanding houses

The M4 freeway between Desainagar and Westbrook is closed to traffic due to the second housing protest in the area in less than a month.

Residents of Thuthukani Seatides informal settlement are back on the streets, after initially bringing the freeway to a standstill on June 17.

Reports from the scene indicate that protestors are using sugar cane and burnt tyres to block the road.

They are again accusing councillor Mxolisi Mzumbovu of selling houses allocated to them.

The community believes the houses built on Hammands Farm near Verulam are meant for them.

Police are apparently using teargas to disperse the crowd.

When contacted Mzumbovu said he was unaware of the protest, saying “nobody had called him to inform him”.
“You are the first person I am hearing this from, but I will try to go there and see what is happening,” he said.
