Ward 22 polls open for by-election

DA and ANC battle it out.

The long-awaited ward 22 by-election is in full swing.

Residents of Shakaskraal, Tinley Manor, Sheffield, Salt Rock and Nkobongo are heading to the polls today to elect a replacement for former DA councillor Ann McDonnell, who has been moved to provincial legislature.

Well-known Sheffield resident Malcolm Hubner, standing for the DA, will go against veteran politician Rigby Heenan, standing for the ANC in KwaDukuza’s biggest ward.

Both candidates went on a final push for votes this weekend.

Hubner sent out a text message this morning, pleading with voters to make the right choice.

“Make your vote count in the right place. Stick to the winning team!”

Heenan thanked all those who had supported him during his campaign, saying it was humbling.

“I remain patient, tolerant and respectful of all the views and opinions received, and naturally expect the same level of courtesy. I am pleased to let you know that I have received an overwhelming vote of support and confidence in what I am trying to achieve.”

The by-election will run as a normal election, with the same five voting stations being used: Salt Rock Library, Sizani Combined School, Bafana’s Café, Tinley Manor Baptist Church and Shakaskraal Secondary School.

Voting stations open from 7am until 9pm.

Ward 22 residents may only vote at the station they are registered at, and must bring their Identity Documents.
