Ward 22 by-election off to promising start

Heenan and Hubner calm on election day

It looks just like general election day in ward 22 today, as residents head to the polls in one of seven by-elections taking place in KwaZulu-Natal.

Voting stations are alive with blue and yellow, as the African National Congress takes the Democratic Alliance on for a chance to govern KwaDukuza’s largest ward.

The DA’s Malcolm Hubner seemed calm and confident at the Shakaskraal Secondary School voting station, where he was joined by provincial and local leadership.

“I think residents know what choice to make. I hope they make their votes count!”

DA candidate Malcolm Hubner (second from left) supported by Ilembe constituency chairman Madhun Sing, DA KZN deputy leader and MPL Francois Rogers and caucus leader Edwin Baptie.

Hubner’s opponent Rigby Heenan was pouring coffee outside the Salt Rock Library when the Courier caught up with him.

“For a long time there was a notion that the ANC is exclusively black. I have proven that this is not the case.”

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu and district mayor Welcome Mdabe were spotted at voting stations, while former ward 22 councillor and MPL Ann McDonnell is stationed outside Sizani Combined School.

Voting stations close at 9pm.

You must carry your Identity Book with you and normal voting procedure will apply.

Both parties expect results will be tallied and released by midnight.

Raj Reddy, Neville Dhani and Monwabisi Mabhena pledge their support for Rigby Heenan in Shakaskraal.
