R102 closed by Ntshawini protestors

The road was blocked with burning tyres and overturned skips.

The R102 was closed to traffic on Tuesday afternoon after Ntshawini residents went on a riot. Angry residents blocked the road with burning tyres and skips, demanding speed humps on the notoriously dangerous road. Their protest follows the death of a woman, who was knocked over by a truck on Monday. A resident who did not want to be named for fear of intimidation said the KwaDukuza municipality should do something about the issue. “The woman was running for a taxi. If the road had speed humps she would not have died,” said the woman. The municipality constructed humps in the area around 2010, which were then flattened during recent construction.

Do you think that speed humps could have saved the woman’s life?
