Ward 22 candidates sign Electoral Code of Conduct

Let the games begin.

The two candidates running in the ward 22 by-election, Rigby Heenan (ANC) and Malcolm Hubner (DA), and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) came together for the signing of the Electoral Code of Conduct (ECOC) at the Umhlali Farmer’s Hall last Friday, June 20.

With the by-elections fast approaching both parties were required to sign the ECOC to pledge their commitment to uphold the laws of and take responsibility for ensuring a free and fair election.

“The ECOC basically sets out the rules of the game that not only becomes the responsibility of the IEC to uphold but the parties and their supporters too,” said IEC Ilembe district supervisor Paul Daniel.

It is the responsibility of the parties and their candidates to educate the community and their supporters about the ECOC to guarantee a calm and professional environment leading up to the elections

“The ECOC ensures that no intimidation, harassment, threats or danger will deny voters their right to choose. This is a binding contract and a moral obligation required of the candidates and their parties. I wish you well in your contest,” said Daniel.

The IEC has 90 days from the date of former ward 22 councillor, Ann Mcdonnell’s resignation to fill her vacancy.

Lieutenant Dieter Fittkau gave his message of support promising to endeavor to do anything he can to keep people safe during the upcoming elections.

“Social crime prevention is not only my responsibility but also that of the prime role players. Instead of leaving us to pick up the pieces afterward, things can be prevented if the right knowledge is given,” said Fittkau.

Both candidates and their party representatives were given the opportunity to address those present.

DA candidate Malcolm Hubner said, “There is no ‘I’ in team, we will all work together. I promise to work with you and for you for clean governance and no corruption and to keep us moving forward.”

ANC candidate Rigby Heenan said, “It is a great honour and pleasure to join a winning team. There is a lot of work to be done. All parties want to achieve the same things, education, job creation, housing etc but we have a distinct advantage of providing the needs of the people with the ANC.”

The by-elections will be taking place on Wednesday July 2 from 7 am to 9 pm at five voting stations in the ward 22 area.

Special votes will be cast on July 1 between 8 am and 5 pm.
