Housing protest closes M4

Residents of Thuthukani Seatides informal settlement blocked the M4.

The M4 freeway at Westbrook was closed this morning by an unscheduled housing protest that brought traffic to a stand still.

The M4 freeway has since been reopened.

Residents of Thuthukani Seatides informal settlement were protesting against counselor Mxolisi Mzumbovu.

The protestors blocked the road using sugar cane and burnt tyres.

They have accused him of selling houses allocated to them. A resident Zama Mthethwa said they were promised houses by Mzumbovu and now he is turning his back on them

“We want explanations,” said a visibly angry Mthethwa.

According to former committee member Zandile Luthuli, the houses that have been build on the Hammands Farm near Verulam were built for them.

“We had a meetings a long time ago and we were promised decent houses. Now that they are built Mzombovu has taken the houses and given them to other people,” said Luthuli.

Counsellor Mzumbovu was not available for comment at the time of print.
