Parties demonstrate for Lindelani shooting justice

Political tension mounts in KwaDukuza.

King Shaka Street in the KwaDukuza CBD came to a standstill yesterday when members of the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African National Congress converged outside the KwaDukuza magistrate’s court.
IFP members were at the court in support of Mxolisi Nxumalo, who was appearing in connection with the murder of ANC member Thando Nuh Mhlongo.
Nxumalo (28) was arrested last week after he allegedly shot and killed Mhlongo outside a Lindelani polling station on Wednesday, May 7.
Leadership from both parties attempted to calm protesters down, with ANC regional secretary Muzi Sithole calling for justice.
“We are working closely with the Mhlongo family to assist them with everything they need during this time,” Sithole.
Addressing media outside the court IFP member Ben Masondo demanded Nxumalo’s release.
He claimed that Nxumalo was arrested along with an ANC member who was released without appearing in court.
This has not been proven yet.
KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu joined the protesters outside the court.
“We urge the community to exercise order and restraint while justice takes course. We are certain that this case will bring about a sense of closure to the family of the bereaved, the community of Lindelani and the ruling party,” said Mthembu.
KwaDukuza SAPF communications officer constable S’busiso Khumalo thanked the protesters for their peaceful behaviour.
Nxumalo will return to court on May 19.
