ANC volunteer killed in Lindelani

Ruling party condemns "brutal, cowardly" shooting.

KwaDukuza residents have awoken to a terrible reminder of the notorious 1997 violence between Lindelani and Shakaville.

African National Congress volunteer Nuh Mhlongo was shot and killed minutes after the Lindelani polling station closed last night.

Mhlongo was standing near an information table when she was shot, in full view of other ANC members at the station.

The shooting has brought ongoing political tensions between Lindelani, a notorious IFP stronghold and ANC-governed Shakaville, to the fore.

The two areas are separated by a single link road.

At least 500 people were killed in bloody political violence after the first democratic elections in 1994.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the party is shocked and saddened by Mhlongo’s death.

“We condemn this heinous and barbaric attack in the strongest possible terms. It is clear that the killing had been well planned to instil fear among ANC volunteers on election day. Lindelani area has over the years been known as a no go area for ANC members during election campaigns. We call on our members to remain calm and resist being intimidated by this act of cowardice. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our killed comrade at this difficult time and we wish them strength and fortitude during this time of sorrow.”

It is no indication at present that IFP supporters were involved in the incident.

A case of murder is being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS.
