Ready, set, vote!

Voters head to the polls for fifth democratic election.

They have done all they can, now it is up to you.

For the past few months political parties have been feverishly campaigning, all leading up to the morning of Wednesday, May 7, the fifth national general election.

The election is significant as it falls in the country’s 20th year of democracy. Official campaigning ended on Sunday evening, May 4 and in the Ilembe district all voting stations are ready for the thousands of registered voters to make their mark.

According to Stats SA more than 5000 voters are registered in ward six (Ballito), 6000 in ward 22 (Salt Rock, Sheffield and Shakaskraal) and up to 85% of voters are on the roll in wards 17 (Stanger Manor) and 19 (KwaDukuza CBD, Rocky Park, Townview).

IEC district manager Paul Naidoo said the final push for voter registration in March this year yielded pleasing results. All of the 352 district and 81 KwaDukuza voting stations are in tip-top shape.

“We are now confident that we will have a satisfactory voter turnout. Our officials are trained and well-equipped to handle the crowds on election day.”

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu also urged residents to vote, saying the opportunity must not be wasted.

“We must be reminded that the future of this country rests in the hands of the people who live in it.”

He commended the political tolerance shown in the run up to elections and asked that it continue on election day.

The Courier spoke to leaders from political parties represented on the KwaDukuza council to get their final words to voters.

A confident, yet humble African National Congress regional secretary Muzi Sithole said overwhelming victory is certain for the ruling party.

“We have covered every corner of our country and province, now it is up to our people. We are continuing the legacy of Madiba and we want you to enjoy election day. Also, we are calling those who have left us to come back home, it is warmer inside the ANC fold.”

The Democratic Alliance’s Ann McDonnell said the party had a strong campaign.

“Go out and vote for change. After 20 years it is time. This is your opportunity so please do not waste it.”
