All aboard the choo-choo train to Durban

Almost a thousand tiny tots from early childhood development centres went to the Moses Mabhida Stadium by train.

Almost a thousand tiny tots from early childhood development centres in Ilembe went to the Moses Mabhida Stadium by train on Thursday.
The train ride was part of Ilembe’s 16 Days of Activism against the Abuse of Women and Children campaign.
The train left KwaDukuza Station just after 8.30am and picked up its little passengers in Shakaskraal, Groutville and Tongaat.
Gender and special projects portfolio committee chairperson councillor Nomonde Mthethwa said this is the third ‘Journey by Train’ the district has hosted.
“Founder, the late Patrick Myeza, contacted us a few years ago to join this programme and it started off with us just providing lunch for the children to what it is today. This year we decided to have the journey during the activism campaign so we could have a chance to talk to the children about how they can protect themselves against abuse.”
For a change, the train ride was not to Amanzimtoti but to Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was a real surprise to children who have been part of the project since its inception.
Last week Ilembe also visited the Thuthukani Home of the Elderly Day Care Centre in Groutville as part of their 16 Days of Activism.
Speaking at the home Cllr Mthethwa condemned the recent rape of a three-year-old girl allegedly by her grandfather that took place in Groutville.
She urged older citizens to join a scheduled march to the suspect’s second court appearance to show their anger.
