KDM rejects cell masts

The network giant faced strong opposition from residents.

The KwaDukuza council has rejected a proposal from multinational mobile telecommunications company MTN, to build two cellular masts in Ballito.
MTN requested permission to build a 15m mast in Rhona Road, off Jacqueline Drive earlier this year (‘Mixed signals for MTN cell mast’, Courier, August 12). Permission was also sought to build a second mast in Sheffield Beach.
The network giant faced strong opposition from residents led by Sherrene Coston, who believed high levels of radiation would endanger them and pupils of nearby Dolphin Coast Pre-Primary School.
Coston rallied residents with a petition containing 107 signatures, claiming residents were not consulted.
She thanked all those who stood by her and the Courier for assisting in public awareness.
“Thank you especially to all those who supported the petition and (ward councillor) Colin Marsh for letting me know of the decision.”
Council noted the objections to the mast and resolved that MTN may still amend their application and re-apply.
MTN said it respects the municipality’s decision.
“MTN will engage with the municipality and it remains committed to providing the community of Ballito and Sheffield beach with a world class cellular service.”
