More space for beach-goers

The proposed move of Salt Rock’s road and the revamp of beaches on the North Coast.

Basil Hulett Drive could be moved to make more space on Salt Rock beach for events as the North Coast is fast becoming a major tourist attraction.
According to ward six councillor Colin Marsh the upgrade would cost an estimated R16 million.
Road upgrades, security concerns and elections were on top of the list in councillor Marsh’s report back to ward six residents last Thursday.
Despite a small attendance at the the Ballito Library, he highlighted some important developments in the area.
Coinciding with the proposed move of Salt Rock’s road is the revamp of beaches on the North Coast.
“The municipality will be upgrading the beach nodes to take pressure off Willard Beach and Salt Rock beach,” said Marsh.
Over the last year the KwaDukuza municipality has spent R10 million in upgrades in the area with major work including replacing old substations and cables. The upgrade of walk ways is also nearing completion.
Marsh also revealed the municipality’s plans to resurface Compensation Beach Road, which should be completed before June next year.
Marsh said community needs are a high priority, resulting in the municipality assigning three community caregivers to ward six. They are going from house to house, checking on people who need social care and special help.
Security concerns were also brought up and the councillor warned of an influx of criminals in the next few months as the holiday season draws near. He also cautioned against hiring casual workers, who can sometimes be opportunistic thieves.
In closing Marsh emphasised the need for people to register to vote. Ward six residents can register at the Ballito Library or the Scout Hall at Townsend park on the weekend of November 9 to 10.
