Millions allocated for taxi rank upgrades in Ballito and KwaDukuza

The upgrade to the Ballito rank is expected to be completed by January next year, and KwaDukuza's by March.

The KwaDukuza and Ballito taxi ranks are to be upgraded at an estimated cost of more than R23-million.

This was announced by mayor Lindiwe Nhaca at a sod-turning ceremony at the Ballito rank last Tuesday.

Improvements will include, among others, the construction of showers for taxi drivers, unblocking stormwater pipe networks, the replacement of defective sewer pipes, the construction of minibus loading bays, and steel roof structures for long-distance route operators and passengers.

“Many taxi ranks are not in a good condition. The environment isn’t hospitable and it is also a health hazard,” said Nhaca.

“We have taken the initiative to work with the local taxi industry to further develop infrastructure.”

When speaking about the reason behind the upgrades, the mayor said they will create a modern transport infrastructure that will increase economic growth and social development in both urban and rural areas. She further stressed that lack of proper infrastructure makes it difficult for goods and people to move from one place to another, with negative implications for the economy.

“KwaDukuza Municipality has a role to play in rehabilitating the existing infrastructure while at the same improving law and order,” she said.

The upgrade to the Ballito rank is expected to be completed by January next year, and KwaDukuza’s by March.
