Guards fired after KwaDukuza Municipality’s finance office robbery

Further security measures are in the process of being added, including installation of an alarm which the building did not previously have.

Two security guards have been dismissed following a break-in at the KwaDukuza finance offices in May.

As was previously reported by the Courier, robbers gained access to the offices in the early morning of May 30, stealing R26 450 worth of items.

The stolen goods included an office laptop, microwave and other electrical equipment. It remains unclear whether there was any sensitive information on the laptop.

KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) contract the security of municipal infrastructure to Pro Secure, whose guards were meant to be on duty overnight.

Following an investigation by KDM’s community safety department however, it was discovered that relevant procedures were not followed.

“The night shift and morning shift guard never patrolled the building together and the night shift guard left without proper handing over of the site,” reads the report.

“The second morning shift guard, together with the first arrived day guard did not check the building, property and its facility if all was in order.”

As a result of the discrepancies, two of the guards were dismissed.

Further security measures are in the process of being added, including installation of an alarm which the building did not previously have.
