New iLembe municipal manager welcomed

Sazi Mbhele has considerable experience in the municipal sphere, having previously served as a performance management systems officer, human resources manager, director of corporate services and being an advisor to both Cogta and Home Affairs MECs.

iLembe district municipality’s new municipal manager Sazi Mbhele was officially welcomed at a special council meeting on January 10.

Mbhele’s appointment was approved by council in December, subject to approval by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Sihle Zikalala, who confirmed the appointment with a five-year contract ending December 2027.

Mbhele took office on January 3.

Mbhele has considerable experience in the municipal sphere, having previously served as a performance management systems officer, human resources manager, director of corporate services and being an advisor to both Cogta and Home Affairs MECs.

Originally from Estcourt, Mbhele holds a Teachers Diploma from the former Ndumiso Teachers College, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Natal, a post graduate diploma in Human Resources Management and post graduate diploma in Management, also from the University of Natal.

Prior to his appointment he served as ministerial representative for Cogta at the Mtubatuba municipality for six months.

He had also previously served as municipal manager for Ndumeni municipality and has also worked as a municipal manager at Umziwabantu municipality following a stint as ministerial advisor to Dr Siyabonga Cwele, first as Minister of Telecommunications and as Minister of Human Affairs.

Council whip Sandeep Oudhram said he had no doubt Mbhele’s vast knowledge of local government affairs would benefit the district.
