R9.4-million sport complex for Groutville

Once complete, the complex will include a full-sized soccer field, grass athletics track, multi-use courts, outdoor gym, cricket nets and updated ablution and changeroom facilities.

Groutville is to receive a R9.4-million state-of-the-art sport complex designed to host a variety of future sporting events.

With both new and upgraded facilities being built, the complex will house soccer, rugby, netball, basketball, tennis, cricket, athletics, chess and indigenous games facilities.

The Groutville Market field on which the complex will be built, is an historic location, given it has hosted a number of important figures in history, including Nelson Mandela, Chief Albert Luthuli and US senator Robert Kennedy in 1966.

“The upgrade of this facility is inspired by the rich history and legacy of great men and women who helped usher in the dispensation of democracy and their efforts of inspiring millions to join hands to fight the disenfranchisement of the majority of South Africans during the dark days of apartheid,” said KwaDukuza mayor, Lindile Nhaca.

Once complete, the complex will include a full-sized soccer field, grass athletics track, multi-use courts, outdoor gym, cricket nets and updated ablution and changeroom facilities.

The project is in line with KwaDukuza council’s Lekgotla resolutions to increase access to sport in the municipality and make future generations more competitive on a district and provincial scale.
