KwaDukuza council to continue sitting once a month

The initial proposal for council to sit on a quarterly basis caused an outcry among opposition councillors and the public.

Following opposition and public concern, the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) council will continue to sit monthly.

This after a change to the council’s schedule was proposed by KDM municipal manager, Nhlanhla Mdakane, who said he had fielded multiple requests from councillors to cut the number of meetings.

He proposed four council meetings annually instead of 12, which met legislative requirements, but this caused an outcry by opposition councillors and the public once it was published in the Courier in July.

Opposition councillors argued that monthly meetings were necessary to keep up with compliance, while allowing for functional voter participation in municipal processes.

In general council last month, the final schedule was published and saw normal council service resume for the next financial year.

“We are pleased to see that our concerns have been noted and we will again be sitting on a monthly basis,” said Democratic Alliance caucus leader, Tammy Colley.
