KwaDukuza council has three new PR councillors, ready to rock the boat for ActionSA, the Inkatha Freedom Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters.
Cynthia Dumakude will represent the EFF, Joyce Magwaza stands for the IFP and ActionSA’s seat now belongs to Stephne Ashworth.
Ashworth hopes to hold the municipality to account on various critical issues, especially waste management.
The Simbithi resident has taken over Gerard de Billot’s ActionSA PR seat in council after he resigned last month.
“I am not sure how to feel yet as this is all brand new to me,” said Ashworth, who has never held political office before.
“It is, of course, exciting and I am hopeful that I can add value in the areas I am most passionate about.”
Ashworth, who has been active in trying to solve the litter issue in Shaka’s Head, said that this is one of the most pressing issues she would like to address.
“I really believe that clean public spaces go a long way to giving people their self-respect and self-worth back. I hope to be able to facilitate that process in some small way.”
Many Ballito and Salt Rock residents will know Ashworth from her ward 22 election campaign, which she lost to incumbent Privi Makhan of the Democratic Alliance.
Known as someone who is doggedly willing to ask the difficult questions, Ashworth said she looks forward to the challenge.
“I have no interest in getting patted on the back, I intend to use all of my time in council as best I can.”
