KwaDukuza municipality scores R1-million for winning cleanest town competition

The competition focus is on implementing the national waste management strategy, specifically relating to reducing, recycling and reusing waste materials.

KwaDukuza municipality walked away R1-million richer after being named the winner of the Greenest Municipality competition at the awards ceremony at the Durban ICC this week.

Hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, the competition began in 2001 with the focus on implementing the national waste management strategy, specifically on reducing, recycling and reusing waste materials.

The competition is open to all municipalities, but with tough criteria.

Municipalities have to provide a good waste management plan, policies and strategies, as well as show strides in lobbying political support for environmental programmes and greening initiatives.

KwaDukuza municipality last year also walked away with R1-million at the same event after claiming first place in the urban municipalities category.

“The municipality will channel the prize money to waste management initiatives,” said mayor Lindi Nhaca.

“The municipality acknowledges there is still a long way to go in terms of waste management, but its efforts and strategies have been commended.”

She said a lot remained to be done throughout the KwaDukuza region to free it of litter and illegal dumping.
