Young lion to lead as iLembe district municipality’s new mayor

In his acceptance speech, Shandu emphasised the importance of working together as councillors and putting political differences aside.

The iLembe district has one of the youngest mayors in the province.

Mandeni’s 33-year-old Thobani Shandu was elected on Tuesday at the Deda sport ground in Ndwedwe.

Thobani is a member of the African National Congress Youth League and was previously the ward 14 (Sundumbili) councillor in Mandeni. He is currently a PR councillor for iLembe district.

The deputy-mayor is James van Wye, while former deputy-mayor Dolly Shandu was elected as the new speaker.

All three were elected uncontested.

In his acceptance speech, Shandu emphasised the importance of working together as councillors and putting political differences aside.

“We have been entrusted by residents to work for and serve the iLembe people to the best of our ability. Behind the political T-shirts we wear, there is an African child, so we must not forget we need to focus on service delivery,” said Shandu.

Last week Lindi Nhaca was elected as KwaDukuza municipality’s new mayor, Thulani Ntuli as the deputy-mayor and former mayor Dolly Govender as the new speaker.

In Mandeni, Thabani Mdlalose has been re-elected as mayor, Bhekithemba Magwaza as deputy-mayor and former deputy-mayor, Phindile Sishi, as speaker.

In the Ndwedwe local municipality, Samuel Mfeka was elected mayor, Zandile Siwety as deputy-mayor and Mduduzi Cele as speaker.

In Maphumulo, the only municipality in iLembe where the ANC lost to the IFP, Siboniso Nyathikazi is the new mayor, with Musawenkosi Ngidi the speaker and Sinenhlanhla Chili the deputy-mayor.
