ANC wins all major positions in KwaDukuza council

The council elections followed coalition agreements that were finalised as recently as this morning.

Former KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) speaker, Lindi Nhaca, has been elected as new mayor of the municipality.

The 5th constitution of the KDM council took place at KwaDukuza town hall today (November 22), where major council posts were determined by way of ballot.

Following rushed coalition agreements finalised as recently as this morning, the African National Congress (ANC) was able to occupy all major posts.

Lindi Nhaca addresses council as mayor for the first time.

The first election was that of the speaker, with previous mayor Govindammal “Dolly” Govender (ANC) elected by a clear majority.

She attracted 35 votes out of 59, with Kathleen Naidoo of the Democratic Alliance (DA) receiving 15 votes and Thobisile Nkosi of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) claiming 4.

The constitution of the Executive Committee (ExCo) was the next item on the agenda, with its 10 seats split between 7 parties.

ExCo members for 2021 – 2026:

  • ANC – Lindile Nhaca, Thulani Ntuli, Sicelinjabulo Cele and Nkanyiso Mdletshe
  • AIC – Duduzile Mthembu
  • DA – Tammy Colley
  • ActionSA – Nel Sewraj
  • Independent Alliance (IA) – Melisizwe Ntleko
  • Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) – Musa Sibisi
  • EFF – Thobisile Nkosi

The main event of the morning, the election of mayor from the pool of ExCo members, saw Nhaca bagging 36 votes, followed by Colley of the DA with 14 votes and Nkosi of the EFF with 4.

The same voting patterns followed, with the ANC’s Thulani Ntuli voted in as deputy-mayor after ActionSA candidate Nel Sewraj withdrew from the race.

Chief Whip Humphrey Mbatha (ANC) was unopposed.

The ANC supporters in attendance were overjoyed at the announcement of former mayor ‘Dolly’ Govender as speaker of KDM Council.

The final order of business was to constitute the iLembe District Council, which was decided on proportional basis from councillors in the KDM council.

KDM will be sending councillors from the ANC (4), DA (1), ActionSA (1), EFF (1) and IFP (1).
