KDM elects ANC’s Lindile Nhaca as new speaker to council

As council speaker, Nhaca's responsibility is to ensure oversight on municipal functions, accountability, integrity, discipline of office, and the efficient running of council meetings.

ANC Cllr Lindile Nhaca was introduced as the new speaker of KwaDukuza council during a virtual council sitting last Thursday.

Nhaca was elected unopposed after her predecessor, Phumile Zulu unexpectedly resigned in February to join the KZN provincial legislature.

Nhaca has served as the chairperson for the municipal public accounts committee (MPAC) since 2016.

The main purpose of MPAC is to exercise oversight over the executive functionaries of the council and to ensure good governance in the municipality.

As council speaker, Nhaca’s responsibility is to ensure oversight on municipal functions, accountability, integrity, discipline of office, and the efficient running of council meetings.

In her acceptance speech Nhaca appealed to ward councillors and ward committees to do what was expected of them.

“We live in very challenging times. The rapidly accelerating outbreak of the coronavirus has come with great devastations. This includes among others, the ailing economy, the upsurge of crime, corruption and unemployment which further intensifies poverty. It is through such conditions that we all need to work as one society in order to overcome such challenges. I therefore accept this mandate in the knowledge that it also calls for collective responsibility that rests across all members of council,” she said.

Mayor Dolly Govender expressed her confidence in Nhaca.

“She comes with a lot of experience. I am sure she will deliver her best and take the ANC to its greater heights,” she said.
