Work on the Thompson’s Bay beach amenities upgrade will continue, confirmed Balwin Properties general manager, Anthony Diepenbroek, who said they were operating under instruction from Kwadukuza municipality on the project which included the rehabilitation of the ablution facilities and the storm water.
“Work on the storm water could only progress to the extent of uncovering the cause and remedy for the collapse of the culvert. Once this was uncovered further work required an approval from the Provincial Environmental Authority. We are expecting this emergency approval within the next day or two,” said Diepenbroek.
The property group is behind the R1-million revamp to the beach’s lifeguard facilities and includes upgrading the ablution facilities, the public showers, replacing the old plumbing and fixing the run-down roof.

The project is part of the Groups community social responsibility initiative.
Over the past few years the beach has been plagued with numerous sewage leaks into the tidal pool from the public toilets while the aging building infrastructure has been a point of concern with local beach-goers.
At a site handover Diepenbroek said they will be addressing the issues that have caused the closure of the tidal pool on numerous occasions.
The site has been cordoned off from public access and will remain so until the expected completion at the end of November, in time for the anticipated festive season.
