R30 million rand water project for Ndwedwe

The project was due to be launched last year.

Ilembe disitrict municipality will spend over R30 million renovating the Ndwedwe South System Refurbishment in the 2019/2020 financial year.

This project will serve seven of the 19 wards of Ndwedwe municipality.

Introducing the contractor, Sizabonke Civils cc trading as Pilcon Projects, to the community at the Sonkombo Sports Field in Ndwedwe last Friday, Ilembe mayor Sduduzo Gumede said the project was meant to be launched last year.

“A contractor was already appointed but we received objections regarding the appointment of the tender. It took us six months to start the process again,” said Gumede.

The project will include upgrading of an existing PVC pipe with a steel pipeline from Nkwambase booster pump station to Sonkombo pump station, refurbishment of Nkwambase booster pump station, repairs of existing water reticulation pipelines and metered household connections within Nkwambase water supply scheme.

The scope of work for the Sonkombo scheme will include upgrading of an existing PVC pipes with steel pipelines, refurbishment of Sonkombo pump station and repairs of existing water reticulation pipelines and metered household connections.

“This will also include completion of all outstanding civil works and any electrical and mechanical installations and commissioning of the treatment works.

All of this is scheduled to be completed in a year and the contractor has indicated that 15 job opportunities will be created at the beginning of the project and that the number will increase to 40 as work continues,” said Gumede.

About 16 696 residents from 2 783 households in wards 10 and 11 will benefit as well as communities in wards nine, 12, 13, 16 and 19.

Gumede said the contractor will be assisted by four sub-contractors from Ndwedwe.

Offering a message of support, Chief Sifiso Ngcobo of KwaNyuswa said the launch was a clear indication of the importance of being patient.
