DA’s Privi Makhan is stand-in Ward 22 councillor

Makhan will be taking over the duties of the late Malcolm Hubner until a by-election is held later this year.

Democratic Alliance PR councillor Privi Makhan will be stepping into the councillor’s seat as the temporary ward 22 councillor, taking over the duties of the late Malcolm Hubner.

DA Ilembe constituency head Dean Macpherson announced Makhan as a stand-in councillor until a by-election is held later this year.

“She lives in Sheffield Beach and has worked alongside Malcolm Hubner. I have every faith that she will assist residents in service delivery issues and will do so out of the current ward 22 office at the Salt Rock library.”

The 37-year-old woman has been active in community projects as an activist and volunteer for the DA for the past ten years. She grew up here and has a passion for politics.

She looks forward to stepping into the new role.

“I have always been an involved and curious individual, even as a young child. In the late 2000s, I made a concerted effort to become more involved in helping bring about real change, and I think this was a direct result of being privy to the many injustices that ordinary South Africans experience.”

Makhan served in the ward 22 committee as secretary and the late councillor Hubner had hoped she would take over from him in the event of him stepping down.

“He always referred to me as his protege. I am truly grateful for all that I have learned from him in the last five years and he has certainly left a massive void in our hearts.”

When she is not voicing her opinions and driving social change, Makhan spends her time reading and driving around game reserves with her husband.

The little lady with a big heart said she planned to make waves in the political scene.

“What I do know is I want to be actively involved in change, especially at the local government level. Right now though, my biggest focus is election day on May 8, 2019.”
