KwaDukuza mayor to receive honorary doctorate

Ricardo Mthembu is currently serving his second and final term as mayor.

The Independent Theological Institute will tomorrow honour KwaDukuza municipality mayor councillor Njabulo Ricardo Mthembu, with an honorary Doctorate of Theology at Umfolozi Chief Albert Luthuli Campus in KwaDukuza.

“I was not expecting this kind of recognition but I must say that I am very excited and honoured. This means a lot to me,” said the mayor.

Mthembu was elected as the mayor of KwaDukuza in 2011, and was the first KwaDukuza mayor to be re-elected for a second term in August 2016 with two-thirds majority support.

Describing himself as a “simple man”, Mthembu grew up in Macambini (Mandeni) and moved to KwaDukuza when he started his high school education. He became involved with the ANC at the young age of 16 and rose through the ranks to the position of ANC regional chairperson in 2011.

Most recently in July 2018, he was elected to the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in KZN where he has been selected to be on the Provincial Working Committee.
