Flying leap for Ilembe education

Ilembe education department awarded the most improved district in the country.

The Ilembe education department has gone from zero to hero, recently being awarded the most improved district in the country at the national education excellence awards in Pretoria.

Ilembe education director, Doctor Musa Madondo said he is extremely proud of the achievement and said it was a great motivator to continue working hard at improving the district.

The award comes with a education management study trip to France for Dr Madondo.

He will be jetting off in July.

Dismal performance ranked the district last in KZN for matric results in 2015 and 2016.

The following year saw a jump from the 52.42% slump in 2016 to 64.91% in 2017.

When Dr Madondo took the pilot seat early last year, he made it clear that he wanted every stakeholder to be responsible for the success or failure of the district education department.

He had a meeting with all the responsible parties and a plan was drafted to work together.

He said he is happy that they managed to improve the results but that they are aiming much higher this year.

The top five schools in the Ilembe and KwaDukuza Circuit are iNhlokozi High for obtaining 100%, Sinenhlanhla Secondary with 94.9%, Tugela Secondary obtaining 93.7%, Groutvile High School with 91.8% and Mandini Academy with 91.3% pass rates.

Madondo said the award was not judged based on the matric pass rate only, but it was judged by the number of bachelor pass and the number of pupils who were doing mathematics and science.

A sizable 62% percent of the more than 7000 pupils took mathematics and science in the Ilembe region.

“In mathematics we improved by 7% and physical science improved by 5%,” said Madondo.
