UPDATE: R100 000 voter party to go ahead in controversial circumstances

The KwaDukuza municipality will be hosting the event in support of the IEC.

Despite claims that a R100 000 voters registration event was cancelled, the “party” is set to take place at SADTU park, Stanger on Friday at 2pm.

The DA’s Tammy Colley said they vehemently opposed the request which was raised at a special council meeting last week.

“For KwaDukuza municipality to pay R100 000 for a stage, music concert sound system, speed fence, public toilets, a marquee, DJ’s and local artists is an insult to both ratepayers and those who are still waiting for basic services to be delivered as this is not a function of local government,” said Colley.

The address harvesting weekend organised by the IEC seeks to address gaps in the voters roll as determined by the Constitutional Court.

However, KDM municipal knowledge and communications officer Sphelelo Ngobese denied that the event had been cancelled.

He claimed the DA did not debate the item in council, but rather excluded themselves from participating in the event.

But DA Ilembe chief whip Malcolm Hubner vehemently disputed the municipality’s claim.

He told the Courier he believed the item had been dismissed, since it had not come to a vote.

“When the item came to council, the DA objected to it and the ANC said they would like to hold a caucus.

“The DA had to leave the room. But when the DA returned the council chief whip said the item was not going to be discussed further,” said Hubner.
