The Ilembe municipality is determined to address illegal water connections that are responsible for causing water leaks and low pressure mainly in Stanger areas.
Last week, Ilembe mayor Sduduzo Gumede along with the Ilembe technical services department visited residents in New Guelderland, who have been experiencing various water problems including water outages and low pressure.
The visit led to the findings of a number of major and minor leaks in the area caused by illegal connections.
According to the Ilembe municipality 2015/2016 oversight report, illegal water connections and leaks have caused a water loss of 7.78 million kiloliters, costing the Ilembe municipality about R75 million.
The municipality lost over five million kilolitres of water as a result of illegal connections in June 2017 and over three million kilolitres were lost due to leaks in the main lines.
Speaking to some residents, Gumede urged them to report leaks, not only to save municipal money but also to lessen the frustrations of both the municipality and consumers as well.
“Illegal connections must be stopped because they are costing the municipality money. They lead to pipe breakages resulting in water loss as well. This also means people are not paying for service and we cannot repair or maintain our infrastructure if people do not pay. We urge residents to be our eyes and ears and to report infrastructure vandalism and leaks by contacting our call centre,” said Gumede.
