KwaDukuza municipality initiated several development projects in rural areas recently with the aim of uplifting struggling communities.
According to KDM media liaison Sphelelo Ngobese, the projects included everything from road repairs, to creches, community halls and sporting facilities.
“KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has initiated a number of projects in various communities to ensure ongoing growth and development in rural and semi-urban areas,” said Ngobese.
The projects include: a R7.1 million overhall of internal roads in Etete expected to take eight months, the construction of the Khalafukwe Crèche which will take six months and cost R2.1 million, creation of a 500-seating community hall for Mdlebeni at R5.2 million over five months, rehabilitation of the Groutville soccer field and construction of a combo court at R920 693 over three months and the construction of another combo court in Glenhills over three months to the value of R686 000.
Mthembu and other members of council visited a number of project sites as work started, addressing the communities and introducing the contractors who will be completing the work.
Ngobese said KDM was committed to unlocking development in rural areas as laid out in the Integrated Development Plan, and said they were re-affirming their commitment to the implementation of the policy on Radical Economic Transformation.
“To mark the commencement of the projects, Council, by tradition, invites the local community to be part of the projects sod-turning ceremony,” said Ngobese.
Mthembu said the projects would create jobs and grow the economy.
“We initiate these projects in direct response to the people, it is the people who guide us in the work that we do and we do it with common purpose and to ensure that the policy on Radical Economic Transformation finds expression,” the mayor said.
“We need to create more jobs, contribute to our economy and drive progress.”
