A task team made of 12 community and business representatives has been formed to work with KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) to iron out issues and put forward recommendations regarding the new pay parking system.

The system introduced on November 1 imposed a charge of R6 per hour for public bays in the Ballito, Shakaskraal, Stanger and Umhlali CBD.
A feedback report was presented at KDM council yesterday, December 12. Following public protest, concessions have been made and further recommendations are under review.
Concessions
- The parking service has been put on hold in the Shakaskraal CBD as the road belongs to the KZN transport department. KwaDukuza municipality is negotiating with the department on imposing the service there.
- There will be no charge in the parking bays outside Stanger Hospital.
Recommendations
KDM officials are working with the service provider and the task team to negotiate pay parking concessions. The recommendations put forward and that are being discussed are:
- A 30-minute parking tariff for R3.
- That Umhlali Village be exempt as there is not enough revenue to be generated from the area.
- The Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) has proposed allowing the UIP to hire formalised “car monitors” and pay the UIP directly. To allow the Ballito Village property owners to pay a monthly parking fee through their contribution to the UIP.
- That there be a concession for 11 property owners who contributed to the parking fund. There is about R2 million where business owners paid for municipal parking after their property plan did not accommodate staff parking.
- That there be an hour free parking for customers.
Warning
- KDM municipal services executive director, Cecil Veramuthu said traffic officers can and will be fining motorists who refuse to pay for parking as of next week.
