Meet Dean – the new DA MP for iLembe

“I will be going everywhere - from developed areas such as Simbithi, to rural areas like Maphumulo so that everyone knows they have a voice through me.”

After more than two years without an official representative, the Democratic Alliance party in iLembe finally has a new Member of Parliament.

Dean Macpherson will represent the Ilembe District for the DA in the National Assembly in Cape Town, with the mission to “take the fight to the ANC”.

Macpherson (32) was schooled at Crawford La Lucia and hails from Umhlanga, where he still lives and where his father, Rory, was a ward councillor for many years.

In 2009 Macpherson was elected to the Durban North council at the tender age of 24 and he would go on to be elected to parliament at 29.

He holds the portfolio of shadow minister for Trade and Industry and has just initiated a parliamentary inquiry into Transnet.

“I have always been committed to ensuring service delivary and taking a strong and visible stand against corruption. iLembe has been compromised by the ANC’s ongoing factional battles, among other things,” said Macpherson.

Macpherson will soon be embarking on a roadshow to hold public meetings and talk to people to gauge the political mood of the district.

“I will be going everywhere – from developed areas such as Simbithi, to rural areas like Maphumulo so that everyone knows they have a voice through me.”

He said voters should support him for his record of delivering on his promises but also said they can only deliver if people give them the chance.

Macpherson told the Courier he hoped to establish a strong footprint in iLembe by pushing for economic growth and job creation and becoming the largest party by the next local government elections in 2021, leading to a coalition municipality in which the ANC was not the final voice on matters.
