Major upgrade for R102 corridor in the pipeline

"The R102 has good accessibility and a strong road and rail network supporting it."

Seeing light where there was once darkness, KwaDukuza municipality has identified the R102 route that stretches from the Tongaat River to Zinkwazi as a key area for future development.

“The R102 corridor plan is basically a long term master plan of ideas in which the municipality can benefit from existing and future opportunities along the R102 route.

“This can be seen through KwaDukuza residents benefiting from Dube Tradeport in terms of employment, as well as future development that can take place on the vacant land along the R102,” said DA executive committee councillor Malcolm Hubner.

The corridor plan focuses on mixed-use development along the route like large-scale housing developments, large-scale logistics, SMME’s and service industries, office developments and tourism opportunities, agriculture and appropriate housing.

Vacant land at Compensation has been identified by KDM as prime land to be used for agri-processing.

KDM media liaison officer Sipho Mkhize said the corridor plan was put in place to fight poverty and stimulate local economic development.

“The development of the corridor will enable KwaDukuza to gain from the opportunities brought by King Shaka International Airport and Dube Trade Port which are less than 40 minutes away from the town.

“Land will be unlocked for the greater benefit of future developments as well as to promote tourism opportunities identified in the Ilembe District Spatial Economic Development Strategy that includes the King Shaka Heritage Route and Luthuli Legacy Monument.

“The R102 has good accessibility and a strong road and rail network supporting it.”

Hubner added despite the economic benefits of the plan, there is no clear framework or anchor for development along the route yet.

“Basic planning fundamentals like land use data or housing information are absent or out of date. The plan still needs to harness the the full latent potential associated with King Shaka International Airport and we have to take into account before developing, that the R102 road is narrow and in an average condition.”
