The ANC has won in Maphumulo by a landslide 75.2% with 34,452 votes the IFP following quite far behind in second position with 12.16% (24,262 votes).
The atmosphere yesterday at Mthandeni Primary School voting station in Ward 7 was electric as thousands of people queued to vote.
“By voting, It feels like I am a valuable and decent human being and I have contributed towards the development of my area. It feels good.”
Sphephelo Maphumulo (ironically the same name as the municipality he lives in) was voting for the first time.
The 19-year-old from Ward 7 (Emthandeni) was very excited to join the election queue for the first time.
“I am quite nervous and I hope that my favourite party wins. I will be disappointed if the party that I voted for lose,” said Maphumulo.
Phendukile Pulen, was not feeling well said she could not stay at home and miss her opportunity to exercise her right to vote.
“It always feels good, when you see development in your area and you know that you have contributed with your vote.
“Also when there is no service delivery, you can complain with pride.
“It actually makes me feel a complete South African citizen,” said Pulen.
Ward 7 was also won by the ANC with 72.6 % of the votes, so Cllr Betty Luthuli will be serving her second term as a ward councillor.
