Building to be raised from the dead

"What would have cost in the region of R2.5 million is now going to cost KDM around R6 million," said ward six councillor, Malcolm Hubner.

If all goes according to plan, Ballito’s civil servants will move into the renovated Ballito civic building in September 2017 – nearly four years after the building was vacated for renovations.

After the previous contractor was dismissed in January 2015, KDM council approved the appointment of a new contractor, Deep Thoughts Architects, to undertake the design and construction of the Ballito civic building renovation.

Ward six councillor, Malcolm Hubner said the money paid to the dismissed contractor (R2,5 million) could not be recovered and the renovations will now cost an additional R3,5 million.

“What would have cost in the region of R2.5 million is now going to cost KDM around R6 million,” said Hubner.

The building was cleared in November 2013 so that renovations could start in January 2014.

But in January 2015, the contract with Turbomax 33 cc was cancelled due to non-performance.

Ballito’s civil servants have been working from containers at the Salt Rock library since November 2013 and the metal components of their temporary make-shift offices have already started to rust.

Ward 22 councilor, Colin Marsh, said although he welcomed the progress made on the project, he was still skeptical as to whether the new contractor would stand the test of time.
