Darnall pupil wins wall mural competition

A natural-born artist.

Darnall Secondary School pupil Kerushnee Naicker may only be 17 years old but she already has one of her paintings displayed in public.

Naicker’s painting achieved first place at an inter-schools art competition in October last year, hosted by Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM) and UkuPhakamisa.

The stunning artwork, originally drawn on canvas, was re-scaled and is now a mural outside DCLM in New Guelderland.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu unveiled the mural on Thursday, July 19.

“This work of art serves to remind members of the public about the course of using renewable resources in addressing environmental challenges at large. This will now remain municipal memory in ensuring the campaign on dangers of gas emissions and renewable energy resource lives.”

Darnall Secondary School was also given R20000 by DCLM for winning the competition.

DCLM together with KwaDukuza municipality established a trust fund last year aimed at improving knowledge and awareness on reduction waste, recycling and re-use in schools.

DCLM director, James Ndebele said his company is renowned for its involvement in environmental activities, landfill management, recycling and renewable energies.

“We are committed to ensuring significant contribution to KwaDukuza community and the youth, in terms of educating them about the importance of conserving the environment for the future generation”.
