Freedom lights up Ilembe

The Freedom Flame toured Ilembe as part of the 20 years of Democracy celebrations.

The Ilembe district municipality hosted the 20 years of Freedom Flame last week.

The flame was unveiled by KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu on March 10 and will travel to all 11 districts with the aim of commemorating the spark of peace and freedom in the province since the advent of democracy.

South Africa will officially celebrate 20 years of democracy on national Freedom Day on April 27.

The district accepted the flame from the uThungulu district in Dokodweni on Friday and hosted events in all four local municipalities.

District mayor Welcome Mdabe and KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu visited community projects in KwaDukuza on Saturday and Sunday before attending a gala dinner at Ebandla Hotel.

Economic development deputy minister professor Hlengiwe Dlamini and KZN MPL Mxolisi Kaunda also attended.

Mthembu honoured community members who made outstanding contributions in local economic development over the past 20 years.

A closing ceremony took place in Ndwedwe on Monday morning and the flame was handed over to the Ethekwini Municipality on Tuesday.
