Ballito newcomer stabbed after having his phone stolen at McDonald’s

The man followed the pickpocket out of the restaurant before being attacked and stabbed in the arm.

A Ballito newcomer had a nightmare welcome to the town when he was stabbed after ordering food at McDonald’s Ballito last week.

Newlyweds Sheradin and Darlene Chetty recently moved to Ballito from Tongaat. During loadshedding last Monday night, Sheradin decided to get takeout at McDonald’s and had his pocket picked inside the restaurant at around 7.30pm.

“A man who appeared to be waiting for his order approached me. He kept touching me and then I realised my phone was missing,” said Chetty.

“I first asked him to return it. He then walked out of the restaurant and I followed, demanding he give my phone back.”

As he exited the door of the restaurant, another man stabbed Chetty in the arm.

“We recently moved to Ballito, thinking it was safer here, but we were disappointed. We hope the restaurant can improve its security,” he said.

“I was stabbed in front of the employees and a security guard, yet no one did anything. These men got into their vehicle and drove off.”

iLembe police spokesperson, captain Alex Thomson, confirmed that police are investigating a case of robbery.

McDonald’s had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
