Parolee arrested for brutal attack on domestic worker – Shayamoya

The attacker was out on parole for a murder he committed in Driefontein in 2022.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a 40-year-old domestic worker and attempting to rape her in Shayamoya township, near Shakaskraal.

The attack happened last week, on Wednesday morning while she was alone in the house.

Police arrested the believed to be behind the attack on Sunday.

According to her employer, Sdudla Bhengu, she left her employee to check on a neighbour who had allegedly been attacked by the same man the previous night.

“While at my neighbour’s house, the intruder climbed the fence of my property and held my employee at knifepoint. Before making off with valuables, he stabbed her multiple times and tried to rape her. We called the police at 9.30am but they only arrived at 6.30pm,” said Bhengu.

“We have a serious issue with the slow response time from the police. If it weren’t for Detective Ngema and his team’s hard work in identifying and arresting the suspect, I don’t know how much more trouble he would have caused in this area,” she said.

Bhengu said she believed the attacker was out on parole for a murder he committed in Driefontein and had been staying with his sister in Shayamoya.

iLembe police spokesperson Captain Alex Thomson explained the delay and confirmed the man has a previous murder conviction from 2022 when he was a minor.

“The Umhlali police received an initial report of a house robbery with information about the area but not the direct address.

“When officers were dispatched, they were flagged down by another victim in the same area. Members assisted him and opened a case, believing he was the complainant.”

He said the domestic worker was taken to hospital and could not be reached on her cell phone. Police were only later informed that she was the initial victim in the robbery case. She was assisted as soon as the information was received through a local ward councillor.

A case of attempted murder and house robbery was then opened.

Saps did not clarify whether a case had been opened for the attack on the neighbour.
