No mercy for murderers, rapists and robbers

Eight criminals removed from society after a series of sentences in local courts.

The streets of Maphumulo and KwaDukuza are eight criminals cleaner after a recent series of sentences in local courts.

Convicted murderers, rapists and robbers are among those who had their day in regional court and will spend their next five to 12 years in prison.

Regional courts deal with crimes of a serious nature and do not include those handed down in magistrate’s courts.

In Maphumulo’s regional court, Mandla Mngomezulu (38) was charged with rape and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with four years suspended.

The remaining seven cases were completed within KwaDukuza, one of which was the Ballito mother who received 18 years imprisonment for killing her daughter, which the Courier has previously reported on.

Zakhele Mashaba (40) was charged with murder and sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment, while also being declared unfit to possess a firearm.

He was arrested after stabbing his girlfriend multiple times because he suspected her of cheating on him.

Simekahle Majola (18) will spend 5 years in prison, with 8 years suspended, after being charged with culpable homicide following a plea.

Sboniso Gamedze (29) will spend the next nine years in prison after being convicted of rape.

The court departed from the prescribed minimum sentence because Gamedze had been held in custody since 2019.

Similarly, Amahle Ntini’s (19) sentence for house robbery differed from the prescribed minimum because he had been in custody since his arrest.

Ntini has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

The final two sentences were handed down to Sibusiso Mbatha (25) and Thokozani Ngubane (22), both for unlawful possession of firearms.

Mbatha was sentenced for both firearm and ammunition possession and faces five and one year sentences which will run concurrently.

Ngubane was fined R3 000 and has been sentenced to six months imprisonment and one year suspended for possession of a homemade firearm.
