KZN Police Commissioner orders probe into brutal assault by cops in Tongaat

The video footage shows police officers kicking and hitting a man in what appeared to be an unprovoked act.

KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered an investigation into the conduct of police officers involved in a violent altercation in Tongaat on June 21.

The incident, captured on CCTV, shows several officers assaulting a man in an apparent unprovoked attack. The cause of the altercation is not known.

According to KZN police spokesperson, colonel Robert Netshiunda, the video footage reveals a disturbing sequence of events.

Initially, a police officer is seen hitting the man with an open hand. Shortly thereafter, other officers join in, collectively attacking the victim.

The footage further shows an officer kicking the man already on the ground, and another standing on top of him.

Reacting to the incident, Mkhwanazi expressed his concern, emphasising the importance of officers adhering to the South African Police Service code of conduct and the South African constitution.

He demanded a detailed report on the incident and ordered that corrective measures be taken against any officers found guilty of misconduct.

“Police officers take an oath to protect and serve and as such they must never abuse the powers vested upon them. Communities must be and feel safe in the presence of police officers and not be fearful of the very same officers who are supposed to be their source of refuge. Police can only retaliate with proportional, minimum force if they find themselves under any form of attack. No one is above the law, and that includes police officers,” said Mkhwanazi.

He underscored that the investigation would be rigorous and impartial. If the report uncovers any wrongdoing, the officers will face strict internal disciplinary actions.
