Heavy sentences for Maphumulo murderers

Gunmen held victim and his girlfriend at gunpoint and drove off with them in a car.

Two members of a gang of four have been handed heavy sentences for the murder of a man near Vukile in Maphumulo four years ago.

According to iLembe cluster police spokesperson, Captain Alex Thomson, Sphesihle Mtambo was waiting to pick up his girlfriend when he was confronted by four armed men.

They held Mtambo and his girlfriend at gunpoint and drove off with them in a car.

On the way, they shot and killed him and dumped his body at Balcom in Kranskop. They also shot the girlfriend, but she survived.

Police later arrested the suspects in Maphumulo.

Fana Ngema was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Mtunzini High Court for the murder, 10 years for attempted murder, 15 years for armed robbery and five years for kidnapping.

The second accused, Ayanda Gcwabaza, received 10 years for murder, four years for attempted murder, 10 years for armed robbery and four years for kidnapping.

The third accused is deceased and the fourth did not appear in court. A warrant of arrest was issued.
