Motorists left stranded as robbers target cash-in-transit vehicle on R74 in Kranskop

The robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money after the attack.

The R74 came to a standstill last Friday when a group of robbers attacked a cash-in-transit vehicle in Kranskop.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, the security guards were forced out of their vehicle and disarmed.

“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. Kranskop police are investigating,” said Gwala.

Motorists travelling from a government event in Ntunjambili, Maphumulo, had to find an alternative route to KwaDukuza, while others were stuck in traffic for hours.

At the scene, police had a difficult time trying to clear a large crowd who gathered, hoping to pick up money that might have been dropped by the robbers.

Early last month, a cash-in-transit robber was shot and killed in a shoot-out with police in Mandeni.

This was after a gang of robbers ambushed a cash delivery vehicle on the P415 after security guards collected money from a shopping centre.

The robbers opened fire on the delivery truck and robbed the security guards of their firearms before making off with an undisclosed amount of money.
